Youtube laminate floor install

In the kitchen was a year-old peel and stick fake hardwood look. We were going with the distressed, shabby chic look apparently. You can read the beginning of the floor saga and all the problems we ran into when we started pulling up the kitchen floor, the HUGE unexpected expenses, as well as my best tips for choosing flooring for your home. FUN times at the Christmas holidays! We knew we wanted the same flooring in both rooms to unify and enlarge the space and we were thrilled to partner with Golden Select for this DIY project.

We chose Toledo Laminate Flooring , which has an authentic wide plank, handscraped texture with the beauty and feel of hardwood flooring. After all the deconstruction of the floors and finished kitchen, hooray!

I have to confess that, after waiting awhile for our flooring to arrive, I was pretty intimidated when this showed up in our driveway! It was pretty exciting, but those boxes are heavy. I tried to hook the pallet to my truck that was at the top of the driveway with a strap and drag it a bit closer, but that snapped. Then it was personal!

Marty was wisely away for the weekend. This particular line came with the pad already attached to the back and was a wide-plank design, which we absolutely love. The thickness is a whopping 15 mm 0. It also allowed a rigidness that made us so confident in how the flooring would hold up to traffic and pets, parties and people.

I was blown away by this feature alone! There are a number of different approaches available on the internet as to exactly how and where to start a flooring project. However, they ALL start with a mandatory acclimation time of at least a couple days, letting the product adjust to climate, humidity, temperature, and even elevation. Let me address something right away that you might have already observed.

That is the roll underlayment under the Golden Select product. Remember that the Toledo line comes with an attached foam backer. However, I chose to add additional underlayment because over half my existing sub-flooring had a light to moderate degree of glue residue on it after removing everything from peel-and-stick to tile floors…to the tune of five layers!

I could not have my floating floor sticking in place to glue! My thinking was that it would literally tear the floor apart to be stuck tight in one place and not in another.

They are called floating floors because they are specifically and intentionally not attached, but they also expand and contract with temperature and humidity variation of the seasons. There was also consideration given for extra sound buffering. My starting point choice was the longest exterior wall, which is where the windows are.

In any laminate flooring installation, moisture needs to be a consideration. Should errant water or humidity make its way underneath the laminate, it can cause issues. Since concrete is relatively porous, it is susceptible to gathering up moisture and expelling it. This usually occurs after heavy rains or in especially humid months.

To prevent this from getting under the laminate, a moisture barrier is necessary. Moisture barriers are usually made of polyethylene or asphalt-coated kraft paper. By laying this directly on the cement, it will prevent any water from getting under the flooring. Install an Underlayment. Since you are laying the laminate on a concrete slab, you are going to want some cushioning. Cement is a harsh material and can be bad for your feet and back with extended use.

This is why it is necessary to install a cushioned underlayment over the moisture barrier. Sometimes, underlayment will already be attached to the planks of the laminate. After you have installed the moisture barrier and the underlayment, you are ready to lay down the laminate. Laminate planks usually have a tongue and groove type coupling system that makes them easy to install. If you do choose to use laminate in high moisture areas take the time to learn how to seal the joints.

Sealing as mention above. Gluing with waterproof glue is another, though the floor is meant to expand and contract. Or, using a silicon caulk between each seem as your are installing the floor is another option. Remember the substrate is usually a compressed board product and once there has been water penetration it could lead to trouble.

Even the littlest spill from over watering a plant, a fish tank, water bowls for you pets etc… can be problematic if left unattended to. This is important with any product susceptible to humidity as well as expansion and contraction.

Get your materials into the area your installing so it can acclimate to the temperature and humidity of the work area. Follow your manufacturers recommendations but a good rule of thumb should be hours. Not doing so may cause bucking or unsightly gaps in your laminate flooring if it is not acclimated properly. A huge pet peeve of mine is walking across a laminate floor that looks like stone and wood and having soft spots.

Your sub floor needs to be perfectly level to prevent the soft spots. Soft spots can also lead to the edges receiving more wear an tear than they should. Whether your applying over concrete, plywood or composite, make sure your floor is level.

A combination of grinding, sanding, and using a self leveling material will get your floor level for proper installation. Because laminate flooring is so thin it offer no structural integrity and bends and flexes easily. Underlayment is a thin layer of foam that absorbs any small deviations in the subfloor below.

It is critical to choose the right underlayment for your laminate floor installation , taking into consideration the location and the subfloor. When there is any chance of moisture coming from underneath a moisture barrier is a must. So it should go with out saying that concrete floors in your basement family room will need a vapor barrier. Consider vapor barriers that also act as underlayment as well. If you laying your laminate floor over wood subfloor on a first or second floor, skip the vapor barrier as wood is a natural product that is meant to breathe.

As I mentioned earlier a laminate floor is meant to float, it interlocks and moves together. Do not cut your laminate floors tight to baseboards or a wall. This is the most common reason for buckling! Also a separate problem but falls in this category is nailing your quarter round into the floor through the laminate rather than into the baseboard.
