Windows vista x86 vs x64

Debugging x64 apps is done with remote debugging from the bit subsystem to the bit subsystem. NET apps by default are marked "any platform", which means they're run under bit on an x64 OS. That means that managed debugging is remote by default. NET on an x64 OS, unless you mark your app as bit-only. Is code written in Vista 64 compatible on 32 bit os? It's been my impression that 64bit windows is designed such that 32bit programs that live entirely in UserLand "just work".

Programs like device drivers that need kernel mode access will likely need a bit specific port. I'm not aware of any notable exceptions to this, though I'm sure you could find some if you look hard enough. So with the possible exception of mobile device emulators, visual studio should be okay. To be sure, once install, check the compiler profile to see if you can build in X86 and X If yes like I do on my Vista you are alright!

As others have said VS is a bit app, so whilst it runs fine on a bit OS it will only see the registry and parts of the filing system through the 'magic' mirroring windows provides. The only time this has been an issue for us is when we tried to add a reference to a COM dll in a. NET app. We had to register the bit version for this to work. Mine is incredibly slow and I can't find any answers relating to why! Stack Overflow for Teams — Collaborate and share knowledge with a private group.

It really depends on your hardware. After running on XP due to budget constraints for the last year I have finally gotten a new machine. It was like pulling teeth. But now, I have upgraded all the hardware and built an AMD spider platform.

I have listed the specs below. After researching the issue, I am going to rock th bit version of vista. My main concern was just the games I run but it looks like they will all play without a problem. Troy, sounds like a nice configuration. If so, what were the results? What about cpu intensive routines, such as, video editing and rendering? Where does the new Intel i7 cpu's fall into this? Robert, I have never run a benchmark myself with Vista x However, the general rule is that there are only a few applications available that perform better on a bit machine.

It all depends on the software. I can safely say that Vista has improved over time and a lot of the bugs are addressed. I myself use Vista X64 and most of my programs are indeed 32 bit programs.

My system came preinstalled with x64 and what is said in this article is true. So yes, this article speaks truth.. Other than that, don't waste your time ppl unless like said before, your a video editor or something and need the power of Posting again, my spider platform has been rock solid with the exception of the motherboard. No crashing, no errors, no nothing. Pure speed and an absolute great user experience.

I think a lot of the complaining about vista wasn't necessarily attributed to the inability of Vista, maybe it was the users? Who knows, but I love it! I'm not sure wether Linux euro-style has this versatility, I think should like yesterday isnt soon enough.. Your email address will not be published. Notify me of followup comments via e-mail.

Brandon Lee wrote a new post, Redirect user profile folders documents, pictures, etc. For a long time, roaming profiles and folder redirection were the standard means under Windows for making user files available on different devices.

Now that more and more users work on the road or at home rather than in the office, this technique is becoming increasingly obsolete. An alternative to such environments is to redirect profile folders to OneDrive. Paolo Maffezzoli posted an update 23 hours, 25 minutes ago.

Dedicated workstations for professionals are another great candidate for x64 edition so long as they're willing to put up with limited peripheral support.

The free Paint. NET image editing application, for example, is fully optimized for multi-core and x64, yet Adobe can't get its act together and won't even release an x64 edition of the upcoming Photoshop CS3. That doesn't mean you can't run x86 Photoshop; in fact, it will still probably run a little better on Windows x64 because more than 4 GBs of RAM can be supported with ease, which gives more memory to Photoshop.

It's just a crying shame for Adobe to lag behind, because Paint. NET has shown tremendous speed increases using x64 for filtering and layering effects on the order of 50 to percent speed boosts. Adobe should have been supporting x64 two years ago and it won't even do it next year.

The bottom line is that you have to look at your own hardware limitations before you can make any kind of a transition. If all the hardware you want to use will work on Vista x64, it's well worth the transition. I've changed the way I charge my iPhone.
